5 Great Ways To Learn More About American History

Learning history is important for understanding the world today and where we have come from.

Studying American history can be particularly important for understanding how this country works – including its politics, rules, cultural norms and social divisions. But just what are the best ways to learn more about American history?

This post outlines a few different great ways to educate yourself.

Visit museums and historical sites

One of the most fun and interactive ways to learn about American history is to explore the country’s many museums and historical sites. Washington DC is brimming with historical attractions including its various monuments and memorials, the Smithsonian museums, and a number of guided tours (including tours of the White House).

Throughout the rest of the US there are all kinds of other historical attractions that can be great for learning about the country’s history including the Gettysburg Battlefield, Ellis Island, Alcatraz Island, The Alamo, Kennedy Space Center, Independence National Historical Park, The Freedom Trail and Historic Jamestowne.

Watch movies and documentaries

Documentaries are a great way to learn about the history of America. You’ll find these on regular channels, TV streaming services and even platforms like YouTube (great for under 10 minute videos on niche topics). Many historical drama movies can also be very educational.

This includes various patriotic movies and others that look into the nation’s less glamorous moments. You can also find many TV shows based in American history.

Read books and online articles

The most traditional way to educate oneself is to read. Nowadays, there are so many historical books to choose from – including non-fiction and historically accurate fiction.

If you don’t have the patience for books, there are also many articles and blog posts online that delve into historical topics. This includes brief overviews in layman’s terms to more extensive essays.

The Library of Congress site, National Archives and Smithsonian Institution site are just a few great places to find resources.

Attend lectures and seminars

Many historians host lectures and seminars around the country that anyone can attend. These can be a chance to learn about specific topics that you may have an interest in from experts.

You can also attend more informal talks in the form of historical ghost tours or historical shows/reenactments at various historical attractions. These could provide a more fun and relaxed way of learning about history if lectures aren’t your thing.

Take a course in American history

If you already have an interest in American history and really want to expand your knowledge, why not consider taking a course in American history?

There are many college degrees and short courses that focus on US history. These can be a chance to become an expert in the subject and could even enable you to access various careers based around US history.

There are also more informal shorter workshops and courses for those that simply want to learn but are not so keen on obtaining formal qualifications. You can find details on courses online.
